To celebrate International Women's Day, we present this lecture about the stories and contributions of Konkani Catholics in Old Bombay, with a specific focus on stories of women from the community.

ABOUT THE LECTURE

The Catholic community from the Konkan region has played an instrumental role in building, shaping, and reimagining the city.

Through Soboicar, an oral history project (conducted in partnership with The Citizens’ Archive of India) that documents the lives of people who migrated from the Konkan to South Mumbai, Jane Borges hopes to map and explore how this community interacted, integrated, and engaged with other Indian communities in Mumbai, and how they shaped many neighbourhoods that are slowly vanishing from the city’s consciousness.

With March 8 being observed as Women’s Day, the lecture will highlight the contributions of many women of the community, among others, through material gathered from the oral history interviews.

Borges will also showcase the entire gamut of her work and how oral histories have shaped and influenced her own fiction writing, especially her upcoming novel, which has a Konkani title Mog Asundi (Let Love Remain Between Us).

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Jane Borges is an independent journalist, novelist, and oral historian. Her work has appeared in publications such as Mumbai Mirror, Sunday Mid-Day, New Lines Magazine, Scroll, The Swaddle, The Asian Age, and Muscat Daily. In 2022, she received the RedInk Journalism Award.

Her debut novel, Bombay Balchão (2019), was shortlisted for the Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puruskar and the Atta Galatta Bangalore Literature Festival Book Prize. She has also co-authored the non-fiction book Mafia Queens of Mumbai: Stories of Women from the Ganglands (2011), a chapter of which was adapted into Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bollywood film Gangubai Kathiawadi (2022).

Borges leads Soboicar, an oral history project documenting the lives of Catholics who migrated from the Konkan to South Mumbai (in partnership with The Citizens' Archive of India). In early 2025, she was the visiting Charles Wallace Fellow at the University of Stirling, Scotland. Her second novel, Mog Asundi, is scheduled for release in 2026.

She lives in Mumbai.
